About Mims, Florida

Mims is an iconic town with features like a true American community. All over town are properties with family farms, fields, and orange groves. You’ll see plenty of cows, horses, goats, and chickens here, plus picturesque views and a serene ambiance. Its peace is hard to find in towns these days.

Although it is a tiny place, Mims is thriving. Even its real estate market is excellent, with a couple of hundred homes for sale that could be your next home. If you’re looking for a cozy town to start a family in, Mims could be the place for you.

A Bit of History

Mims has real historical significance — Harry T. Moore and his wife, Harriette, lived here. Moore was a civil rights leader, the founder of the NAACP in Brevard County, and a teacher. In the 1940s, the couple had helped more than 100,000 Black Floridians become registered voters. They were incredible people who helped their fellow men, but were met with tragedy.

Both Moore and his wife died on Christmas, 1951, when a bomb beneath their floorboards killed them. It was said that the murder was racially motivated and likely committed by members of the Klu Klux Klan. Today, a cultural center is erected on the land where their home once was. Multiple sites were dedicated to the couple throughout Mims and the rest of Brevard County.

Things to See in Mims, FL

Since it’s a small town, you won’t see what you’d expect in a tourist city. However, you’ll be amazed by the unexpected adventures that Mims has to offer. There are many lovely things to explore here, such as the White Sands Buddhist Center. In there, you can see towering buddha statues made of white granite.

There is, of course, the Harry T. and Harriet V. Moore Cultural Center. As we said, this is a center dedicated to two of the important civil rights advocates in the US. You might want to go to Hatbill Park, too, if you’re looking for a nice location for camping. You can also make a lovely day out of seeing the sunflowers and picking fruits and vegetables at the Sledd’s U-Pick Farm.
