Making the Move: A Pet Owner's Playbook

The excitement of moving to a new home often comes with a whirlwind of tasks and emotions. For those of us with pets, the complexity of planning and executing a move doubles, as we worry about the comfort and safety of our non-human family members. "How do you move with a pet?" It's a common query, reflecting the anxiety many feel about ensuring their pets' well-being during this tumultuous time. Drawing on personal stories and expert advice, this guide aims to ease your concerns, offering practical tips for moving with pets, be they chickens, cats, or a big old German shepherd.

Traveling Together:

For many, the thought of leaving their pets behind during a move is unthinkable. Whether you're driving across town or across the country, having your pet with you can ease their anxiety and make the transition smoother for both of you. One pet owner shared their story of moving to Ohio with their German shepherd, turning what could have been a stressful journey into a bonding experience. The key is preparation: ensure you have a comfortable, secure space for your pet in the vehicle, along with plenty of water, snacks, and breaks for stretching and relieving themselves.

Temporary Housing:

Sometimes, the timing of your move may leave you in a lurch, with your new home not quite ready to accommodate your pet. In such cases, consider asking the new homeowners if they’d allow your pet to stay in the property while waiting for the official move-in date. This arrangement can provide your pet with a quiet, safe space to acclimate to their new environment, even before your boxes are unpacked.

The Old Home Strategy:

If your new residence isn't ready to welcome your pet, another option might be to leave them at your old home temporarily. This works best if the property is still in your possession and vacant. Leaving pets in a familiar space, even if it's empty, can be less stressful than dragging them through the chaos of moving day. Just make sure to provide ample food, water, toys, and, if possible, have someone check on them regularly until you can reunite.

Prioritizing Their Comfort:

Regardless of how you choose to handle the physical aspect of moving with pets, their emotional well-being should be a top priority. The experience, from their perspective, is fraught with confusion and anxiety. They don’t understand the changes happening around them. To ease their stress, maintain as much of their routine as possible. Keep feeding and walk times consistent, and ensure they have familiar items like blankets, toys, and dishes. Recognize that it’s normal for pets to be stressed during this time, and patience will be your best tool in helping them adjust.

Conclusion: Home Sweet (New) Home

Moving with pets requires extra planning, patience, and care, but it’s entirely possible to transition your animal companions to their new home without undue stress. By considering their needs and maintaining a sense of normalcy, you can help mitigate the anxiety associated with moving. Remember, it’s not just about getting them physically from point A to point B; it’s about ensuring they feel safe, secure, and loved throughout the process. With these tips and a little preparation, you and your pets will be ready to start this exciting new chapter together.

Moving with pets doesn't have to be a tale of woe. Armed with the right strategies and a compassionate approach, you can ensure the move is a positive experience for every member of your family, pets included. So, here's to new beginnings, for you and your furry (or feathered) friends!
